What is so wonderful about the 5 cylinder motors? I have a 1987 Audi 5000S Quattro. Nice car, reasonable engine. The engine that is in this car is a non-asp 2.3L 5 cylinder that developes 130hp with 91 octane fuel. This pushes the car along pretty good and gives 22 to 23 MPG on a good day. You would never be able to use this engine in a Vanagon without serious modification to the bellhousing or switching fuel injection systems. All the Audi Motronic engines have their crank position sender on the flywheel. The SA bellhousing doesn't have this provision. This means that you can't use the CIS-Motronic system the engine was designed for. The 2.1L 5 cylinders don't have this problem, but then a 2.0L I4 will have more power and is easier to install. Another thing that I don't like about the 5 cylinders is that they are a pain to work on - changing the timing belt or waterpump isn't a simple 15 minute job like it is on the I4. Also the I4s arn't discontinued like the I5s are... something to think about.

Now, if you could get one of those 2.2L "MC" turbo engine running in the back of a Vanagon - that would be great!
