For me the easiest way to remove the stock speakers from their death grip inside their housings was to use solvent to melt the bond. Using an eyedropper I carefully "flooded" the inside attachment circle with MEK (or any strong solvent like acetone or lacquer thinner). After 45 seconds to a minute I gently pried the speaker out.

Once the speaker is out leave the housing face down until the remaining solvent evaporates. You don't want it leaking down and risk scaring the faceplate area. Then I remounted two new Blaupunkt 3.5 or 4 inch speakers in the enclosures. The speaker's metal tabs were bent backwards 80 degrees so they could wedge themselves against the housing wall when pushed into position. Finally to really secure the speakers I liberally applied a ring of PermaTex Ultra Black silicone around the old glued mounting track.

I just put a new CD player in Zippy (85 Westy), and heard just how bad my stock "stereo Prep" speakers from blaupunkt sound. These are the 3.5 inch ones in the brown plastic housing in the doors and air conditioning cabinet. My local VW dealer has no info on replacement, and nothing in the local stereo shops (radio Shack, best Buy, Circuit City) can flush mount shallow enough for the window crank to pass.

I'm trying to dig the old speaker out of its enclosure, but that's tough.

What have the rest of you done?

BTW, I tried to search the archives for the last week or so, but have been unable to get any response on anything.

TIA, Peter &Zippy
