To tear the air filter you would have to have a dramatic and sudden air pressure differential between the front and the rear of the filter. The air scoop pressurizes the entire air intake system, and you engine does not suck enough air to cause a big enough pressure drop. The intake system is essentially a closed system (no flames, I said 'essentially.' The air will move in only as fast as it comes out the tailpipe, or as fast as your moving pistons and valves will allow it to.

What are you running in your Vanagon? A blown Hemi V-8? Oh, wait, it's not Friday yet.
