Upon disassembling my front end, i discovered some festering rust that began to eat into the frame. There is a rod that comes out of the lower control arm that is for adjusting front end alignemnt. It inserts into the frame with large rubber bushings. When I removed the bushings, it was all rusty inside and completely invisible from the outside. The steel sleeve that inserts through the grommets and through which the steel rod passes was rusted nearly all the way through. These parts were very worn as well and I need to replace all of them. The rust was so bad that is pitted the frame member where the rubber grommets are pressed against it. Water apparently gets trapped in there. I had to grind it off with a wire brush wheel and drill. I can see how this could cause enough damage to require surgery on the framemember. steve |
