Mine has the same miles, that is if the milage is
correct (see "90 westy price" in today's archives)
Interesting this is coming on for you too. THe one
good thought that came from the list was bad motor
mounts, seems to be a possibility but the noise itself
has a low pitched explosive property that is it comes
on just at that moment when the engine catches where
one takes their hand off the ignition key. I have this
other problem that may be related, in that my
automatic transmission lever kill switch that is
designed to keep the car from starting in drive or
reverse, is keeping the car from starting in Park or
neutral too unless I draw the gearshift to the left
slightly to make the electrical connection, all while
turning the key. SOmetimes I let up on the gearshift
pressure before the engine catches, and subsequently
the car doesn't start. SO then I go ahead and repeat
it and this time shen it starts I get the slight low
pitched boom/knock which I am starting to wonder if it
is backfiring due to gas vapors that made it to the
exhaust by an engine that was finishing cranking (via
momentum from the starter), but not getting sparks to
the fuel at that last millisecond of ignition, so
unburnt fuel gets in the exhaust, then when I go to
start it again, everything blows at once...backfire.
Although its not a gunshot like backfire. My bug used
to do that with a faulty distributor.
Hope this helps

"Fruitlands" is name given to the region around Harvard Mass by early settlers. We dont live there any more, but I did when I chose fruitlands as a user name.
