I was just arranging a couple (5) spare vanagon tires in my back yard. the important thing I noticed was that 2 outta 5 had a repair plug in the sidewall.... not the tread but the side these are and never were repaired by me. they are acquired from other vans in the past from differant owners... the scary thing is that with the massive amount our vans weigh and the problem with side wall flex... well if a front wheel blew on a quick/heavy turn there would be hell to pay...all to save a few $$ and not replace the tire I only bring this up outta concern for the saftey of list members and their families. If the heritage of your tires is questionable then I highly suggest you go out and check the sidewalls for repair plugs and other defects. especially the fronts.
