The trick to getting the old speakers off is to first pop off the door panel (after removing window crank, etc.) Then, unscrew the inner and out plastic surfaces of the speakers from each other (i.e., by twisting each side counterclockwise).

I solved the speaker replacement problem and kept everything Blaupunkt as follows:

(1) In the front doors, I mounted Blaupunkt "separates": a small dome tweeter and a 5" woofer. I carefully removed the old front speakers from their housings and clipped out the inner part of the plastic grille, into which I was able to mount the tweeters. This leaves plenty of room for the window crank. I placed the woofers lower in the door panel. (You could probably fit a 6" speaker there with a little cutting & filing.)

(2) In the A/C cabinet, I mounted 3.5" Blaupunkt 2-way speakers, which fit just fine w/ no modifications required.

My "head" unit (cassette/AM/FM) drives the front speakers; I added a separate amp under the driver's seat for the rears.

I did all of this about 5 yrs ago, so have not given specific speaker part references. (I got all of the components from Crutchfield.) Nevertheless, you should be able to work a similar set-up with today's counterparts.
