Volks...

Have been on the list for about three weeks now and have been following the thread about the ecu, ratio rockers, etc. Particularly enjoyed Robert Lilley's contribution of the article from an Australian mag about the ECU chip from Vintage Vee Dub. Also got the list from another listee of all the parts he installed to upgrade.

Am thinking about upgrading myself and may want to jump in on the group ecu purchase, but like you, Brian, I'm wondering exactly which elements need to be swapped out to get a reasonable amount of return from the investment. In other words, I don't want to go overboard, but my understanding is that the ecu is just the first step. Having installed that, the ratio rockers are mandatory, right? What elements beyond those two do you pretty much have to do to derive the basic benefits before it becomes "iffy" as to whether to continue. Does anybody follow me here?

I'm no mechanic, but take a great interest in understanding what the hell is going on with my bus. My 89 syncro westy has only about 41K on the ticker and runs perfectly. Maybe the axiom, if it ain't broke, don't fix it applies, but the advent of more power, better gas mileage sounds attractive to me.

Thoughts?

Thanks for all the help you guys have given me.

Okay; I keep hearing about how this new chip (for $260 or thereabouts) is supposed to improve all-around performance on a Vanagon -- but does that apply to all years, or is this like a Digifant, where it's only for '86 and up vehicles?

Is the ECU even related to the Digifant/Digijet?

Yep, I know the gearheads of the group probably think this is a stupid question, but I'd just like to get this clarified -- because frankly, if sticking a chip into my 85 is going to improve it, then I want "in" on this deal.
