Its a 2.? liter 5 cylinder non turbo indirect injection engine. I've driven them and they are slow, not as slow as the 1982 diesel westy, but still a lot slower than the gas version. You also could not get AC with the early eurovan diesels, which is a problem for a lot of areas of the country.

The slowest VW I ever drove was a 1982 LT28D diesel westfalia that was for sale locally (western canada). It was built on the LT chassis, had a 2.8 liter 5 cylinder non turbo. The LT of those days was a big van, bigger than our domestic vans. It was Very tall, had something like over 6 feet of standing headroom front to back in the fixed fiberglass roof. Plus there was an enormous roof rack. Had hot water, shower, everything we wish our vanagon westfalias had. But the engine was straining just to get up to speed in the city. Top speed was 80 - 90 km/h, or about 50 - 55 mph. European driving conditions must be much different than north america. You would get rear ended just trying to merge on to the freeways.
