Subject: Windshield Wiper Problem
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Desperation being the mother of something or other, I thought I had better rejoin the list with the hope that I could get some help!

I was driving through a fairly heavy rainstorm with the wipers on high speed when they all of a sudden changed thier range of motion to start from horizontal pointing left and end straight up. I stopped as soon as I could and pushed them back to the normal neutral position at which point they would not work at all.

Having wrestled the mechinism out of the van generally along the lines recommended, the motor always parks in the same place and the range of motion seems to be about normal. In the process of extraction, the park position was reset since I tried to detatch the motor from the arm in the car.

So, at the moment the mechinism appears to work. The question is whether it is likely the gears or whatever jumped within the motor to cause the park position to jump or if this is likely to have resulted from the drive from the motor to the arms slipping. In short, am I likely to need a new motor or do I just reassemble the mess and get on with it.

My supplementary question(s) concern extraction/reinsertion of the drive assembly. The bushing on the passenger's side required a lot of force to depress it fully into the hole to facilitate extraction. It was only after changing motor position that it could be made to come out at all. There seems to be some sort of obstruction which I cannot identify; is brute force the correct extraction technique? Any tricks for re-insertion (other than lining up the linkage in the stopped position as per the manual)? Although I should not have to do this, I have all the rear and side dash screws out but without messing with the steering column it refuses to budge.

Any advice on this matter would be appreciated!
