Subject: Engine warm-up troubles
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

I am having a little trouble in the morning with warming the engine of my '87 Westy (gas). It starts fine and even revs a little higher (1300 RPM) then idle ~ like some sort of choke action is taking place. The RPMs drop back down to about 900 almost immediately (about 2 ~ 3 seconds of higher revs) If I stick it in gear (automatic) and give it gas at this point, no go. The engine doesn't accelerate at all - kinda acts like it is bogging down - it will creep forward but not accelerate (this is the problem). After about a small city block it begins to run perfectly for the rest of the day unless the engine gets cold again. This happens everyday. Now if I let it sit and warm-up for a couple minutes it will take off fine. I know I should let warm up completely first etc. BUT I shouldn't have to. Of greater concern to me is when it gets really cold outside (in Colorado), I'm concerned that this problem will get worse. I bought the Van about 3 months ago and it has always acted this way. Other vans I have owned in the past did not.

Here is what I have seen to check from the archives:

Checked Temp sensor 1 with ohm meter - it reads in spec. The air flow meter was just replaced about 3 months ago. Did all the ohm checks on it and all seems in order.

Check temp sensor II. It to was in ohm spec. range.

Drained gas tank - Installed new fuel filter/fuel.

That's all I know to do.

Any suggestions that a do-it-youself'r-can do?

Thanks, Al Ferguson aferguso@brazosport.cc.tx.us
