Hi Bill, I just had this happen to me on one of my '87's. I carefully took apart the headlight switch and cleaned the contacts. Did it on the side of the road in fact. The instrument cluster cover comes off from the windshield side (kind of hard) The switch comes out with a couple of with a couple of finger tabs from the rear. Like almost all Hella stuff, a knife blade or small screwdriver will get the part in question apart. There are little catches on the back of the switch that will allow access. It is advised that you do this over a towel or clean surface in case you drop the small parts. Once inside, its pretty intuitive. Clean the big contacts with a clean business card in a pinch, contact cleaner if you can. If all else fails or you just don't want to do the disection, get a different switch. As an emergency procedure, you can use a piece of wire in the plug and short the large connectors to get lights for the night.
