Subject: NATO Jerry Can Flexi-spout too big? EZ-Fix:
Content-Type: text/plain

Has anyone purchased the surplus NATO type 20 liter jerry cans from one of the various places they are available for $9.95 to $12.95? These cans were a topic on the list from some time ago, which is why I am posing this semi-non-vanagon related item.

The detachable flexible spout that fits these cans unfortunately does not fit into our puny little ecologically correct unleaded fuel fill openings. One day I got sick of using a funnel and pouring carefully, so I marched off to the hardware store, filler neck in hand, and I found a very simple, cheap fix: The nozzle on the flexible spout has exactly the same outside diameter as 3/4 inch copper pipe. Get yourself a 3/4 to 1/2 reducing fitting and about 4 inches of 1/2 inch pipe, attach them to the end of the nozzle and you're all set. Cost under $1 (I had spare 1/2 inch pipe in the basement already - I'll bet if you look in the dark, cobwebby spot behind the furnace you'll find some!) The fit was snug enough that I had to use a block of wood and a hammer to assemble the pieces and no soldering was required. Solder them if you're worried about things falling into your gas tank.

Hope someone finds this helpful! Doug Fitz-Randolph Freeport, ME '90 Syncro
