I have the 041A for $9 too and they are VDO but here is the catch. The syncros I have seen (which is only a couple) have had a aluminum or some type of metal bottom to the thermostat housing. Into this housing you can only screw in the earlier sender (041). I actually have these for $30 (cheaper than I remembered) and they fit the syncro and the 1.9l Vanagon. Check your van. Do all syncros have the metal bottom of the thermostat housing? I just assumed so since all the ones I saw had them and I figured they did this to make them stronger and more rock resistant. So if you have the plastic thermostat housing the 041A will work, but the metal folks out there need the 041.
