I tried starting my van last week and all I got was a click and a hum from the back end, tried 20 times, each time the same. I had the van towed to my mechanic, he said the battery was fine but the starter motor was shot. $350 and a new starter motor later and I drove it away. Whilst camping this weekend same thing. 20 attempts and nothing, just a click, put on a new battery same problem. Someone suggested as it was humming to leave the key in the on position for a few seconds, after about 15 seconds the van turned over and started. This problem is intermittent and as I have a new starter doesn't seem to be related to the starter. Have I just forked over $350 for nothing? Anyone know of a good VW mechanic in Cleveland who's name doesn't start with "Simon's Auto"?
