If you drove the new battery with the bad alternator the battery could be ruined - if you use the new alternator to charge a nearly dead battery you can damage the alternator (the more times you do this the more it becomes true). There's a guy around who makes a living rebuilding alternators - he recommends to charge a dead battery with a battery charger not the alternator (like if you're stranded, you get a jump, then go home and charge it fully on a battery charger).

He said that he puts in new bearing and won't reuse the old - but the suppliers to flaps buy these used bearings from him and put them in their rebuilds.
