The key is to grease the shaft before putting the boot on, especially where the small end of the boot will ride. By NOT putting the small clamp on, this end can move a little back and forth. This movement will relieve stress on the boot and also let air seep out if required, while continuing to keep water and other particles from entering. Once when a friend did, his new boot blow up like a balloon, and broke. Later a mechanic said that the boots have to be burped, if clamped air tight, otherwise the air gets hot, expands and blows up. On another note, ty-wraps don't work on CV joints. They will leak at the end to end connection because they are not flat against the boot.
