It is much better than the T1 engine. It does have a few problems and like the WBX there is a fix. The heads tends to drop valve seats if over heated and to fix that simply have a tighter interference fit. Many T1 owners are putting T4 engine converted to upright fan in Beetles. The T4 engine can go up to 3.6L . This is done ALL over Germany and the US is finally catching on... So, you must have heard incorrect info... The WBX is the BEST of both the T1 AND T4 engines.
