You may have hit a nerve there Stephen. Apparently VW South Africa terms this condition "heterodyne", whatever that may be. It is only noticeable in a quiet car, but with the radio on or chatting you can hardly detect it. VW engines have never been silky-smooth, but this 2.0 litre engine in my Jetta is reliable, strong & gutsy. If you want smooth, then drive a Toyota 1.3 sedan. I doubt anyone will pick up the resonance in a rwd vanagon.
