I like d. but...

Same thing happened to me on the WBX last year.In my case it was the original brushes that had finally worn out. Happened about 100kms from home but the good old original battery that was 7 years old at the time got me home with out any dramas. After I did the brushes I got paranoid and replaced the battery too. Didn't want to tempt the VW gods...
