What the mechanic was saying didn't sound right to me either, but he doesn't have the experience of hundreds of other vanagon owners to counter his theories.

Another mechanic told me the other day that you don't have to ever change the coolant ever in a vanagon. I ask him why, and he said that because they're always leaking a bit thereby necessitating the addition of new coolant, it's as if fresh coolant would always be in the system. He was quite serious about this.

On the same day, another mechanic insisted that that it's pointless to completely drain and refill the vanagon cooling system unless you're going to truly flush the system with water. He said that leftover acid will remain in the system otherwise.

Both of these guys sounded confident in their words, so what is one to do without the vanagon list (not to say that there aren't differences of opinion here, but usually something close to the truth can be distilled)?
