I have 3 manuals for my Scirocco, and 2 for my Vanagon. I start with the Chiltons pocket guide to FWD VW;s. That gives me enough info to tear stuff apart. Then I go for the Haynes to put it back together. Then i break out the Bentley when all doesn't go as planned (usually). It's not uncommon to see all 3 open to the same section on my workbench ;)

I don't think Haynes is all bad, and for my ex-T-Bird and my g/friends ex-hyundai the chiltons was absolutely unusable.. It intimidated me so much that I was reluctant to get a Bentley, and took my vehicles to the service department for months before I broke out the wrenches...

The Haynes (UK) for watercooled vanagons is really good for minor repairs, but even the Bentley leaves a lot of stuff out....
