I noticed a difference in my '84 Vanagon with the 2.1l engine in it with no power steering and customer's 86 Vanagon with power steering . The '84 runs like a scalded dog and accelerates great off the line, no problem. The '86, feels a litle less spry off the line. Once you get it rolling it is OK, but noticeably slower off the line.

Having said this, I wouldn't trade either of them for my '91 Carat with Automatic. It is slower than both of them off of the line because it is an auto and I load it down with my family and all our stuff. But I love it anyhow. If you want acceleration, buy a Porsche. If you want to enjoy getting there, drive your Van. Have a great night.
