Subject: A/C Ducts Falling in 91 GL
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Thanks to everyone who sent advice about the A/C Vents. For those of you who didn't see the original message, I have a '91 GL with about 54,000 miles on the odometer. About 4 weeks ago, my wife was driving along and the 3 middle A/C vents came crashing down.

I did a little looking around and found out Volkswagen had recalled the vans in 1993 to install reinforcement plates and fix this problem. I was curious as to whether or not VW would perform the warratny work 7 years later (It was obvious the warranty work had not yet been performed on my van).

I called the local dealership and gave the service manager my VIN. The computer was showing the work had already been performed. So I called VW Customer Service. The first individual I spoke with listened to my story and said they couldn't do the recall work because of the high mileage on the van (I hadn't told her the mileage - just that it is a 1991 model). I told her the van has just 54,000 miles on it and then she said they couldn't do the work because of the age of the van. I asked to speak with a supervisor, which she said she would do, but he was just going to tell me the same thing.

I presented my case to him and he initially said he couldn't authorize the work. I then presented the problem as a safety issue and he immediately said he would talk to my local dealership and authorize the work. Four days later, the A/C is back in place with the plates installed.

Thought you'd like to know.

Colin 91 GL
