Subject: How to Connect Trailer Lights
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Hi Volks:

You have just bought a trailer, and you want to get the brake lights, running lights and turn signal lights working, right?

Do this:

Buy a "Hoppy" 46155 Universal kit (Converts vehicles with independent bulb turn signals to common bulb trailer turn signals) You need a converter, because a standard 4-flat connector will NOT work with a Vanagon.

About the kit: No cutting or soldering of wires required,.... contains a voltage testing lamp, tube contact grease, protective boot for the converter. Cable ties, screws, connectors - the works. Pretty cool kit - Bosch quality IMHO.

Cost: $37.00 CDN at Princess Auto. Maybe $17.00 in US.

To install:

1. Look at Bentley page 94.6, Figure 2 for the pinout of the taillight assembly.

2. remove left taillight, pull back connector's boot, and connect wires from kit to proper wires on tailight.

3. Remove right tailight, and just connect RH turn signal wire, using same process as above.

4. Connect the ground on any good ground point.

5. Done.

You could connect the kit by cutting into the taillamp's harness cover, and then start tracing wires - the method described works just fine, and is more foolproof.
