I just got off the phone with Gary from "Gary's rebuilt VW engines and
transmissions".
From how I described the problem to him, he suspected it was a bracket
inside the transmission that broke. He suggested that I have someone lower
the nose of the transmission and take of the cap. Right inside, he
described a bracket that would be broken and easily replaced.
Has anyone heard of this? Make sense? Anyone lowered the nose of the
transmission without taking it out?
Brad

You have some pretty good advice so far. Definitely try disconnecting the
linkage and testing the shifting.
Yes, the tranny is in neutral when you can pull the shaft in and out of the
tranny. Play with it and you will be able to "feel" the shift pattern.
But the bad news is that your symtoms are typical of the 091-1 transmission
when the 3rd/4th gear operating sleeve (slider) cracks or breaks. The
problem is documented on my website at
http://volksweb.relitech.com/091trans.htm
Good luck,
