No, VW added the dual sender/dual warning circuit with the introduction
of the 2.1 in '86.  It's pretty obvious they knew this engine was going
to be harder on bearings, there is no other reason to warn drivers of
low oil pressure at 2000 rpm.  It's just too bad they didn't tell owners
what it really means when the buzzer goes off!

I'll be disassembling my original 1.9 engine this weekend.  It will be
interesting to check the bearing condition after 200,000 miles with 5000
mile oil changes.
