There is a good article on this at:

syncro passenger van and a blown engine westy and put the westy parts on the
syncro NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. There is a cheap westy on ebay right now:

been lots of list discussion on this particular van, but it is an
interesting reference point.

Also, http://eurocampers.com sells some stuff that would interest you. They
have a German text DIY camper retrofit book at
http://eurocampers.com/page14f.html. If it doesn't have to look stock you
may want to look at their EuroVan Weekender & MV Kitchen Module
http://eurocampers.com/EVKitchen.html. I see no reason why it wouldn't fit
in a Vanagon but you'll want to look into it.
