I know you can obtain exhaust insulating tape, hi-temp exhaust coatings,
and many other things you never even knew existed at a place called
Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Co. ( http://aircraft-spruce.com/ ). They
have a catalog about as thick as the Bentley manual and it's free.
(Usual disclaimer: I have no affiliation...) Order a copy - when it arrives
I guarantee you'll spend the entire evening thumbing through the pages
with all kinds of little wheels turning in your head!

On the subject of exhaust heat - one night a few weeks ago I was in a dark
parking lot trying waiting for my cooling fan to kick on. To speed things
along, I ran the engine at ~3000 RPM for about a minute. I had a light
plugged into the cigarette lighter clipped to the rear seat to illuminate
the engine compartment... the light came unplugged and went out... and
what did I see? The exhaust header pipes were glowing dull orange! I think
I might be "running a little rich", but still - that's awfully hot,
isn't it? I'm curious if anyone else has made this observation?
