Francoix,

Not that high!

The Type 4 VW engine is prone to dropping exhaust valve seats at high temp/high mileage. According to my VDO head temp gauge, my temps never exceed 350, and most of the time stay down around 250. However, this is a localized indicator of only one cylinder, so it's of limited usefulness.

If you are truly running that hot, you may be running your engine too lean for some reason. These engines cannot take high temperatures for very long, so be careful.
