Chris,

Here is an idea for you:

Take one of your Bentleys and extract (yes, tear it apart) the pertinent pages for your model year. Then take them to Kinko's or the like and have them comb bound with nice plastic covers. You can even create a multi volume set by category this way and only haul around what you need. The comb binding opens flat, you can have pages inserted by any shop with the machine, and you can truly customize your manual.

I've done this with my MG manuals, but haven't gotten around to it yet for the Vanagon.
