I saw a boat available a while back (saw it on the web somewhere) that was a folding boat, and it was made in japan, came in different sizes, and if I remember clearly, you could put this boat on your roof. They made mention on the site that it was tested by dropping it from a high height into the ocean... I think it was a little long for the vanagon roof though... but its been a while...
