I'll bet he is talking about the 091 tranny that was in the air-cooled
Vanagon, not the 091-1 in the water cooled vanagon. On the 091, the linkages
are up near the nose cone. There is a circlip that can pop off the selector
shaft and leave you "shiftless". That would most likely affect all gears.
On the 091-1 transmission, the shifting mechanism is more towards the center
of the transmission housing. The selector shaft could have broken - but I
have never heard of one breaking while in use. They get damaged when the
mechanic tries to put the trans back together wrong and forces the shaft
into place.
