I also had an 88 with the odometer shaft slipping off the pot metal gear but fixed it with much less fuss. I was afraid of cutting, crimping and gluing the pot metal gear to the shaft (glue might also stick the case or first set of numbers) so I applied several very thin layers of rubber cement in the center hole of the gear, let it dry well and after I had lined up the numbers I forced the pot metal gear back on.
