I second the necessity for noting NOT to drive at night. I regularly go down about 200 miles south of the border on surf trips. My roof rack holds 2 splitty 10 gallon gas tanks (I recommend at least 5 gallons to carrly with you, full at all times). We usually do a bit of off-roading while there and the beach is about 10 miles from the paved road.

A nice spot light (400,000 cp or better) is a must. You want to see what's making that noise before it shows up next to you!

I always carry at least 5 fix-a-flat cans. If you don't use them you will make a friend for life if someone else does.
