Doug...

You know, I remember now that same thing happening in either my 86 gl or my 88 wolfie. It was under warranty at the time and vw fixed it up like new. I had forgotten about the whole incident until a week or two ago here on the list, someone mentioned it happening to them. But the reason I'm writing is that they said they took it to a vw dealership and complained that it had fallen. When the dealership said that the vehicle was not under warranty anymore or that the recall had expired (I think there was actually a recall on them, but I'm not sure), they made a bunch of noise about safety and hinted at legal action and suddenly the dealership was happy to fix the problem! Did you see that post? Maybe somebody on the list remembers it and can refer you... or you can find it in the archives.

Now, if you're sure you want to lose the ac, that's one thing, but there may be another option...
