Woody, I have an '84. If you get al the air pockets out of the cooling system, and your cooling system is really tight (remember a vacuum can form on cool-down and this can let air in), the light will stay off.

The overheat alert light in the water temp gauge of my 83.5 is flashing constantly, though the gauge does not indicate overheating and the coolant level is full. Could this be linked to the malfunctioning wiper switch? Other ideas?
