Part of rear drums is cost part of it is need. You don't need as good of binders on the rear as the front cause of the whole weight transfer thing when braking. If you had even small disks on the rear, you'd have to really run low pressure on them vs. the front to keep them from continuously locking up durring hard braking.

That said, doesn't anyone make a disk brake conversion for vanagons?
