From what I've come to understand- the electric mode gets the chimney warmed up sufficiently so as to get the convection flowing so that propane won't pool and flood the combustion chamber and a also a proper amount of oxygen (or atmosphere at least) is able enter. Basically, it gets the juices flowing well enough for the propane to just jump in. Think of DC operation as the guy who warms up the crowd before Regis comes on stage. (I'm sure Mark Dorm has a much more brilliant analogy.) ShawnZ
