The engine lid may very well be higher in SA, but they're now putting in 2.6 liter 5 cylinder engines in with 100kW of power and 200Nm of torque - the inline 4 is used for SA engines that were wasserboxers - (no ones going to put in an inline-4 2.0 liter to replace a 2.6 liter 5 cylinder are they?) The tiico does not need a raised engine lid. What it needs is certification for california smog - and people who can afford to buy it.

There was some discussion that the engine lid in the SA >Vanagon was higher (and who knows what else is different). Thus because >an engine will fit in a SA Vanagon does NOT necessarily mean it will fit >in a US Vanagon. >Does the SA Vanagon have EXACTLY THE SAME emission controls as the US >Vanagon? If not, is it not possible those may conflict with an SA >engine?
