On the VW Type 4 engine, it doesn't really matter to which spark plug the sensor
is connected (assuming you are using sensor that goes under a spark plug).
Cooling air reaches all cylinders uniformly, unlike early Type 1 engines of the
past.

My VDO gauge spans 0 - 650 deg. F, and 350 is right in the middle. The needle
rarely makes it to 350.

If you are experiencing high temps in 4th gear, either the sender/gauge is wrong
or you are, in fact, running your engine hot. Fourth gear is for cruising, and
at cruising speed, on level road, you should not be running that hot.
