Howdy!

Whilst cleaning out my Vanagon on Monday between thunderstorms, I had opened
the engine hatch to have a look at things. After closing up the engine
hatch, I looked at the whole rear bay, and for the first time, noticed these
dashed lines that are stamped into the metal. They appear on the right and
left sides around the engine hatch.

Anybody know what these are for? I have only two guesses that they are
perhaps cutouts for additional equipment, perhaps for Westfalia conversions,
or that these are footwells for a winch over the engine bay, perhaps for
lifting out the engine. I really am clueless about this one.

Is this a FAQ? Or am I the only person to wonder what these dashed lines
are?

Have a look in under the rug in your engine bay and see if you have the same
thing.
