Monor correction here (read minor) the VSS speed signal required by OBD-1 and OBD-2 is a sender that is located on the back of the speedometer. Cruise control uses the same thing. On the cross flow 2.0L engines, VR6 and 1.8T (Montronic based) there is no tranny sensor, there is a crank position sensor built into the engine - Audi 5 cylinder engines use a flywheel position sender that is built into the transmission.

But you are right, making an OBD-II engine behave like it is supposed to in a Vanagon would be real engineering feat!
