Subject: diesel question
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Hi,

I had to replace the head gasket in my 82 diesel westy. (Someone put an '81 engine in it) It took me awhile to get the parts because the well known mail order place (most of you probably used at some time or another) simply could not get me order correct. Anyhow, once I did get the right gasket and put everything together, the engine runs, but smokes a huge amount, and has NO power. I've checked, adjusted and readjusted the timing and am about 95% sure that is not the problem.

I did the check (as per bentley) the injectors by loosening each union, one at a time. Every cylinder slows the engine idle. I'm thinking that maybe all 4 injectors got dirt in them. I had the head off for awhile, and I didn't realize the huge importance (apparently) of keeping absolutely no dust from getting near the injectors.

Is there a common socket size that will get those injectors out?

Do you think my suspicion is correct? My next step would be to check the compression, but I don't have a meter (yet).

Any input is appreciated. I love diesel, even though it's so slow. I want this beast to run!

BRad
