There is a Vanagon for sale right next to where I work. Here's what I know about it:

Light Blue bottom, white top Bench seat (1/3-2/3) front seat - 9 passenger car 161,000 miles Head leak on one side 4 speed A few dents, but nothing major He wants $1,000 for it.

It runs fair, considering the head leak. I would imagine a head is the minimum necessary to get it going.
