Dan, are driving my Westfalia? :-)
We had almost exactly your experience. I posted the question to the List and the
consensus was that it was a bearing. We crawled all around the van poking and
turning anything but found nothing. I gave up and took it to a mechanic.
He found it. Its the CV joint.
The CV balls are getting jammed and popping in their races. You can see it and
feel it if you rotate the wheel while raised. The shaft actually bounces a bit.
Now I have to find my 12 point, 7 mm allenesque bit.
