I actually had a funny experience not too long ago.  A guy called me to get
my opinion about buying a Vanagon.  He told me he had never owned a Vanagon
before and wanted to know what to get, exsisting problems, etc.  As we talked
he told me he was a lawyer.  I jokingly told him that when he called me I had
already started my meter and that he already owed me $50 for the phone call.
He didn't seem too amused, but this is what lawyers do all the time.  They
have a little meter on thier phone that prints out bills for time that are
broken up into quarter hour increments and you pay to talk to the lawyer
because his time is valuable and he is supposed to know his stuff.  Now I am
not thinking of having one of these installed any time soon, but it would be
good for folks to keep in mind that if they are getting free advice from a
mech that knows his stuff it isn't something that is worthless.  Lawyers
charge for it, and if mechs did too then maybe people would respect them more
(or at least they would be wealthier, and then they wouldn't care if folks
respected them or not :)
