most of the time the oil light coming on is due to using the wrong filter and/or viscosity of oil.... (should be using 20-50 oil and Mahle/Mann or VW supplied filter) ... on the other hand it could be something more serious... you won't know unless you change the filter an oil... and even then there are a couple of minor things it could be... oil pressure sensor bad, wiring bad, oil pressure unit in the instrument panel... but oil & filter is the most likely...

  I am looking at buy a 89 vanagon and while i was test driving the vechile
  the oil light came on.  i checked the oil and it was full.  what could it be
  something expensive or not should i walk or not book says 6000 he wants
  3,000$.  its wolfsberg edition and is in primo condition.  the only thing
  that scared me was the oil light coming on and staying on.   when i pushed
  in the clutch it stoped and the started back up.  got back to the lot shut
  it off checked the oil it was full then started it back up and it was off
  then as i reved it up it started again?
