On my '88 Westy the slider does activate the dome lights. However this was not the case when I got the van from the DPO. Seems there is a rubber "finger" on the slider that activates the lightswitch on the slider door and the rubber finger had fallen off the door. You might want to check and see if your van has a light switch on the doorpost to the slider.
