Apparently, not as ridiculous as you might think. I just went out and sure enough, my sliding door has a light switch. Originally it would just light the light over the driver, but I added one over the passenger side as well and am in the process of adding a light over the sliding door.

After taking the switch out and examining the wiring connected to it, I figured out that the DPO must have installed it as part of putting in an alarm system. Since the wire used is definitely not stock VW wire. The wire goes under the passenger seat and floorboards and up behind the glovebox.

BTW - the area in the door post where the switch is mounted is easy to get to in order to route wires - if you take out the plastic grill on the opposite side (the part that the front door closes on)

regards,

Todd '88 Westy
